Acoustic Recording Techniques Using Ableton and Health and Safety in the studio 12 /5 /16

Today we used the Ableton music software alongside the Ableton push pad to create beats. I enjoyed doing this as it meant that I was in control of how the beat sounded and that i could add whatever i wanted to add to it

Here i was experimenting with Ableton push pad to develop beats. I found it easy to use and i found it enjoyable because also i find it easy to audition different sounds which is good for song writing.

Health and safety in the recording studio

Trip hazards: These trip hazards can be wires that have not been tucked away, they could be pieces of equipment that have been left on the floor. To resolve it just put any object away and tidy and tuck wires away.

Noise: playing music to loud or using an instrument too loud can damage the ears. To resolve limit the volume and don’t play loud music for long periods of time this also includes headphones

Spillages: spillages can cause electrical hazards, destroy equipment and become a slip hazards this could be caused by a spilled drink in the studio. To resolve don’t allow drinks in the studio and if spillages do occur then mop up and leave a wet floor sign.

Live electrical wires: live wires can cause electric shocks and seriously injure someone these wires should be replaced of fixed with electrical tape

Equipment Required for a Recording session

Here is selection of the equipment we will be using for our recording session
This mic is an AKG S1000 Dynamic microphone; it is used for a variety of reasons from vocals to overhead on drums this mic requires Phantom power which is turned on from the desk or from a battery also DI boxes ate used in the studio for a balanced input and they also need to be phantom powered

This is a AKG micro mic and it is used for close miking on snares and toms
It is a dynamic mic and is designed to record loud noises without distorting

This is a Rode NT2 condenser used for vocals its quite sensitive not a bad mic at all
This is a Shure SM58 dynamic microphone used mainly for live performances but can be quite good for recording in the studio

This is an AKG SA40 dynamic microphone used mainly for kick drums  it is also quite good for recording bass guitar frequencies
Here is picture of a person preparing a condenser mic in an acoustically treated room. The room is treated with acoustic foam that stops any reverb which allows you to add your own effects to a clean sounding recording

In these pictures the person is demonstrating how to set up a microphone stand safely the mic that was in use was an SE X1 condenser

This is a multicore and it is used for separating individual instruments and sending them to their own channel on the mixing desk . it is used in a live situation or a recording session

This is an audio interface (002) and it’s used for listening to sound and recording sound into a CPU
also we use this to send a level back to musicians to monitor their sound when they are playing, it has 8 analog inputs and 8 output also it has 8 digital ins and outs so you can have 16 individual signals going in and out of the computer at the same time
