Today we set up and recorded multiple input session using lots of different mics
The first thing i did was run the multi core behind all equipment out of harms way to prevent any one tripping as it is important to remember to follow the health and safety guidelines
Round the back of the piano
Round the table to the back of the computer to the audio interface
Here i am setting up the overhead mic that will record the Hi Hat
We used AKG micro microphones to record the snare and toms
the are good for capturing a drum sound without too much noise spill as they are close to the drums this is a microphone on the snare
Microphone on the toms
Here we used the AKG S1000 Dynamic microphone to record the hi hat the it was about 2 inches away from the hi hat and placed at an angle as you can see in the picture we found this to be the best position after some experimenting , you could place the mic under the hi hat as well with the results being close to the same
We plugged the Bass guitar directly into the Focusrite Clarett audio interface, it has 8 ins and 8 outs and because the bass was going directly into the interface it meant that noise spill would affect the bass channel so the bass player could sit where ever he wanted
we would line up the multi core to make sure that all the ins and outs correlate
Here is Lottie and Hamlet performing a little jam session with the multiple mic setup just to make sure that all the mics are properly lined up and that we are getting good levels on each channel. We then recorded a full track
We monitored the levels using Logic Pro where we would mix the track and add effects and dynamics at a later stage
The overall sound quality was very high and we managed to keep the noise spill to a minimum. Using logic we are able to adjust all the individual levels of each microphone and add any effects and dynamics which will add a professional sound to the track
We use Genelec monitors to listen to the play back from the computer and we had to make sure that the levels we carfully maintained to protect our ears, we also took regular breaks to give our ears a rest and stopped us from sitting in the same position for too long The finished mix was good quality, we used some dynamics to control the sound of the kick and snare to help keep the track sound clean, we used some reverb on the overall drum sound to bring the whole kit together. The bass is clean and we added software keys to bring the sound together.
I tried to add vocals but could not think of a good song so i wrote a fresh one and recorded it with me and Hamlet on vocals.
